The course content is presented in the form of self-directed learning content, probes, and Cognitive Assessment Activities. The computer-based portion of the online ACLS certification course is available 24/7 and can be taken at the students own pace. Once the online portion of the ACLS certification has been completed, the student then schedules an in-person skills exam at American EMT’s emergency medical training center in Birmingham. The in-person skills exam takes less than an hour based on our experience. An AHA ACLS certification card will be issued the same day that student completes the in person skills exam.

ACLS CERTIFICATION COURSES WITH AMERICAN EMT
Advanced Cardiac Life Support is a series of procedures that medical practitioners must use on patients who are experiencing a cardiac emergency in order to have a chance of saving the life of the patient. It is reserved for persons with extensive patient care experience and draws on a wide variety of technical expertise. But for those who are qualified, it might be the difference between a person’s life and death in a cardiac crisis. As a result, skilled medical professionals who will need to treat patients during cardiac emergencies frequently use the skills obtained through an ACLS certification. ACLS is only appropriate for licensed medical professionals who have been trained in pharmacology and cardiology, and who have access to advanced lifesaving equipment and drugs.

Is there a difference between ACLS and BLS?
ACLS and BLS both teach the necessary skills to manage a cardiac emergency inside or outside of the hospital. Basic Life Support -BLS – introduces the student to CPR, use of an AED, and early recognition of cardiac arrest. Anyone can take the BLS certification class, however it is most appropriate for professional rescuers and healthcare providers who provided initial medical care prior to the arrival of advanced life support resources.
ACLS is reserved for advanced medical practitioners who routinely deal with cardiac emergencies and administer medications as part of their scope of practice. ACLS students must have a BLS certification prior to enrolling in the ACLS certification class. The ACLS course covers deadly arrythmia recognition, cardiac pharmacology, manual electrotherapy, intubation, and other topics relevant to healthcare professionals who are called on to provide advanced lifesaving interventions during a cardiac emergency. The ACLS certification is appropriate for physicians, nurses, advanced practice clinicians, paramedics and other advanced level medical providers who practice in the pre-hospital or in facility environment.
How do I get ACLS certified?
To get ACLS certified, a student must first possess a BLS certification and successfully complete one of the ACLS certification courses offered by American EMT. Technically, anyone can become ACLS certified — however American EMT reserves the right to limit our ACLS classes to those medical providers whose scope of practice includes the advanced skills covered in the ACLS curriculum or students of a medical or nursing program at a post-secondary educational institution.
Where can I take an ACLS course?
If you are in the Birmingham area, American EMT offers AHA ACLS certification courses in a traditional classroom and blended learning format. If you are outside of the Birmingham area, the AHA has a very convenient ACLS course locator. Be aware that there are no “online only” options for completing any ACLS course offered by the American Heart Association. An in-person skill check is still mandatory even when taking the ACLS course in a blended learning format. American EMT only offers the AHA ACLS certification because it is universally accepted and internationally recognized by regulatory authorities and medical governing bodies.
How long does my ACLS certification last?
Upon completing an ACLS training course accredited by the American Heart Association, you will receive an ACLS certification card good for 2 years. After completing an initial ACLS certification course, an ACLS renewal course must be taken every two years. The ACLS renewal class cover the same topics as ACLS certification courses but is in a condensed format and also includes the latest updates issued by the AHA.
